A Statement on Safe Spaces
HAMILTON, ONTARIO | December 7 2024
In recent days, we have been made aware that a touted "safe space" for 2SLGBTQIA+ in several communities is now being met with allegations of abusive behaviour and practices. The individuals who have come forward are artists, former employees and guests.
We do not condone this behaviour. Queer and Trans humans are often met with unacceptable harm in their(our) day-to-day lives. Establishments that are meant to be safe spaces for us to gather, support each other, and be free must also ensure that they are free of harm.
Pride Hamilton will not support individuals and/or spaces that will allow this to happen. We will ensure that we find other accessible and safe spaces to hold events in our area. Our organization stands with those who have been harmed and will not promote any such establishments.
Community members have been harmed. These accusations are serious in nature and must be addressed. Continuing to operate this way and opening more locations that will perpetuate this violence is deplorable. With responsibility comes accountability
We call on you to review your practices and investigate these allegations against both the owner and operators. Speak to those who have been harmed and do right by the community you claim to serve.
Safe spaces don't have to be owned by Queer and Trans humans; it takes continuous work to better an operation. Pride organizations are not exempt from this.
Pride Hamilton stands in solidarity with survivors. If you need additional support, please visit the Resource page on our website for resources available within the community.
