Introducing Hamilton’s Newest 2SLGBTQIA+ Resource Directory

HAMILTON, ONTARIO | August 19 2024

This isn’t a post about a directory.

It’s a public service announcement about a critical lifeline for individuals who are searching for safety, support and community connections within Hamilton.

If you’ve been following the news lately, you’re aware of the pushback and hateful protests targeting Pride flag raisings and drag queen storytimes in communities across the country. It feels like 2SLGBTQIA+ communities are under constant attack these days. And it’s happening here in Hamilton as well.

“Despite all the conversations around diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and the strides made towards progress and acceptance, the need for trusted information sources to help community members connect to resources is greater than ever.” says Pride Hamilton Board of Directors Chair, Kiel Hughes. “We’re [PH] being routinely asked to point community members in the direction of various resources because 2SLGBTQIA+ specific programs, services and supports are hard to find. That’s why Pride Hamilton put together what we could find to create Hamilton’s newest 2SLGBTQIA+ community resource directory for 2SLGBTQIA+ specific programs, services and supports.”

Data compiled by Statistics Canada shows that 2SLGBTQIA+ Canadians are more likely to be victims of violent crimes like hate crimes, more likely to experience poor mental health outcomes and be diagnosed with a mood or anxiety disorder, and more likely to have seriously contemplated suicide in their lifetimes.  The stories of the people behind the data make the heartbreaking case for why a directory like this one is essential.

This directory isn’t a “one and done” though, and Pride Hamilton will be continuously adding to it. At the time of launch, categories like Health & Medical, Crisis Support, 2SLGBTQIA+ Youth, Newcomers, as well as General Resources are available, alongside 2SLGBTQIA+ resources for Toronto as well as the Province of Ontario. Each category has a link so visitors can suggest additions or revisions, too.
